Planet-F1 aren’t always the most reliable web site, and jump on the vaguest rumours around; that’s why they’re one of the better sites to read. But this rumour I really want to be false: Ralf Schumacher driving for the all-conquering Super Aguri? Unthinkable!
Super Aguri sum up many things that made F1 so watchable in the pre-manufacturer days: Plucky, unlikely teams with no money fighting above their weight, drivers you root for despite (or because of) the odds against them.
When Aguri entered F1 last year, they did so with 2002-era Arrows chassis bought from Minardi’s Paul Stoddart. One of them was in an airport, painted up in Minardi colours. Scrap-heap purchases that were back-markers four years ago, teased to match the current regulations and plonked on the grid. A brilliant story, and with some luck and a dash of support from Honda, they’re still in with a chance of beating their parent team.
Contrast this with the unpleasant, slovenly (possibly), bitter, overpaid, unpopular and generally slow Ralf. What could he possibly offer the team that Davidson doesn’t offer more of already?
