heroes, villians and clowns: malaysia

Another 2009 race, another win for Button and Brawn GP.

With the race suspended after only 33 laps (31 due to counting back to the last complete lap before the red flag, giving the drivers only half points) due to torrential rain and failing light, who shined in the gloom?

Heroes

Toyota. Trulli qualified brilliantly, as he often does, and Glock called it exactly right on the tyre choice to give him second place. Red Bull were very quick in the damp conditions and come the next wet race they have to be the team to watch.

Villians

Bernie Ecclestone. If the race had started at a normal time for Malaysia, the rain would have it well after the race was over and we’d have seen a full race and full points. With more races moving to the middle east, yet the core audience staying in Europe, we may see this kind of thing more in the future.

Clowns

Ferrari. Yet again, the red team got it dreadfully wrong. Arrogance and complacency with Massa only doing one Q1 lap meant he started 16th was made worse in the race by inept or unlucky tyre choices for Raikkonen (wet when dry was right; intermediate when wets were preferred) meant for a second race with no points.

Kimi gets an honourary mention as a hero for enjoying an ice-cream and a can of Coke while all the other drivers were sitting in the rain.
